Let’s be frank - few orchestras have the reputation the Cleveland Orchestra has. The 100+ member strong orchestra has been hailed as one of North America’s ‘Big Five’, and with The New York Times’ description of them as “one of the finest ensembles in the country (if not the world)”, it comes as little wonder.
This summer, the Cleveland Orchestra will be returning to their summer home with a line-up that will send any music lover, whether you are into classical music or not, reeling. To top that, audiences are in for a special treat this year with a concert that matches the outdoors beauty of the Blossom Music Centre perfectly - a performance of a symphonic favorite, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, better known as the ‘Pastoral’, under the masterful baton of Jonathon Heyward. The Cleveland Orchestra will also be performing Dvořák’s ‘Carnival Overture’ and Anna Clyne’s ‘Glasslands’ alongside the Kent Blossom Chamber Orchestra, with the marvellous saxophonist Jess Gillam as soloist.
Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s popular concert overture, the ‘Carnival Overture’, forms the second part of a ‘Nature, Life, and Love’ trilogy. The work premiered in 1892 in the Rudolfinum in Prague under the baton of the composer himself.
Anna Clyne’s 2022 composition, ‘Glasslands’ for saxophone and orchestra, “conjures an imaginary world of three realms governed by the banshee." The work premiered in 2023.
Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony in F major, Op. 68, is one of the composer’s few works that employs programmatic elements. From the sounds of flowing water to the chirping of birds, from the buzzing of bees to country folk dancing, from dark days of thunderstorms to the instantly recognizable sounds of shepherds herding their flocks after the rain - the symphony is just as fresh and distinct as it was when brought to life in 1808 by a man who could no longer hear those sounds himself. In short, the picturesque landscape portrayed with music, its sublime beauty, its imaginative and rustic character, and reflection of pure musical genius is a sonic experience unlike any other, bound to send shivers down every spine.
The picturesque Blossom Music Centre is once again bound to be a place where the air is filled with stunning music. With the venue’s amenities, superb acoustics, and seating for up to 19,000 music lovers spread across various reserved seating areas and a general admission lawn area, every concertgoer is in for a magical musical experience!
